What is Read Write Inc (RWI)?
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin that teaches children to read, write and spell fluently.
How does it work?
Children learn the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. They use 'Fred Talk' (sounding out words) to blend sounds together and read.
The Three Sets of Sounds
Children learn sounds in three sets:
- Set 1 – simple letter sounds (m, a, s, d, t, etc.)
- Set 2 – longer vowel sounds (ay, ee, igh, ow, etc.)
- Set 3 – alternative spellings (ea, oi, a-e, i-e, aw, etc.)
At Home
Children read colour-coded books (Red Ditty, Green, Purple, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Grey) matched to the sounds they have learnt. Free resources and videos are available at Oxford Owl to support home learning.
